[초록] : The purpose of this study is to see how the subjunctive was used in Old English adverbial clauses. In Old English, the subjunctive was used after expressions of perceiving, thinking, and saying, when the dependent clause contained a statement that was doubtful or impossible, although it might have been certain to the mind of the speaker./ The primary factor that determined the use of the subjunctive in hypotaxis was not the subordinate nature of the clause, but, as in the case of independent sentesces, the speaker's mental attitude towards the semantic content of the expression. Furthermore, the syntactic construction, the introductory connective, or the governing expression did not determine the use and nature of the mood employed in the subordinate clause. The use of the subjunctive as occurring in pæt clauses after expressions of thinking and saying, had no direct parallel in Old English independent sentences./ In Old English independent sentences the conditional subjunctive was chiefly restricted to the apodosis of hypothetical sentences the conditional subjunctive was used to express an instruction in a construction with the auxiliary sculan. The sceal-construction represented a precept, law, or decree more or less without any personal coloring. Used with reference to fatal necissity, the auxiliaries willan & sculan were often used in the conditional subjunctive. In the concessive clauses introduced by peah, it sometimes was difficult to decide whether the reference was to hypothetical ideas or actual facts. It seemed that the auxiliary scylde in conditional clauses couldn't be distinguished morphologically as the indicative or the subjunctive. Moreover, there were some particular cases in which the indicative was used in conditional clauses and the subjunctive in independent clauses. The subjunctive was used in consecutive clauses introduced by swa, pæt, pe ... ne, etc. Particularly this seemed to be the case to denote notional purpose or result.   [초록] : The earliest inhabitaants of the British lsles are deroved wholly from material remains that have been uncovered by archaeological research. Paleolithic Man was probably the earliest in haitant of England. They entered at a time when this part of the world waspart of the contient of Europe. There was 캐 English Chammel and the North Sea was not much more than an enlarged river vasin. Their language disappeared with the race. We know nothing about the language. or languages, of paleolithic Man./ The first perple in England whose language we have definite knowledge of are the celts.Celtic was the first Indo-European the Roman Emperor Claudius occupied the island in 43 A.D. After the Roman Legionnaires were withdrawn from vritain the early fifth century, the picts and scots attacked the unprotected British Celts. The celts came to depend on Romam arms to defend and conquer the picts and Scots in the north. when the Romans withdrew in 410. the celts were no longer able to keep out them./ In the year 449. the Gemanic trives of the Jutes, Saxons and Angles invaded and occupied Britain. After the Anglo-Saxons settled in the British Isles, some Celtic words entered the English language. but Celtic influences were sporadic and almost negligible. The adoption of foreign words into the English language began before the English came to Britain. Latin words formed by far the most considerable part of foreign elemints in the Old English through the medium of Celtic, and certain Latin words borrowed into Germanic before the Anglo-Saxons invaded Britin in the fifth century./ There must have been some contact with Rome./ Latin words which passed into Old English after the introduction of Christianity, through the influence of the Church were spread by Christian writings and not spoken popular Latin. In those days there was little differerce between Scandinavian and English words. Furthermore, Scandinavian words were similar to Old English and made communication possible the English and the Scandinavians. They were given a permanent place in the primary grammatical elememts of English. The English vocabulary owes a great deal to the Danes and the Norsemen. [초록] : Most Old English verbs fall into one of two large classes, the strong and the weak. The weak verbs, which for the most pat are derivative and denominative, form by far the greater majority of all Old English verbs. They are divided into three classes according to the endings of the infinitive, preterite indicative, and past participle. Three classes of weak verbs were distinguished in Old English. Weak verbs of the first class had a prehistoric suffix containing -j- or -i- ; the second class -oj- or -o- ; the third class –ai-./

In the first weak verbs both j and i umlauted the vowel of the radical syllable. Wherever j occurred the final consonant(except r) of an originally short radical syllable was geminated. But i, though causing umlaut, did not cause gemination. The j, which caused the doubling of the final consonants in the present stems, never existed in the preterite or past participle, so that these stems ended in single consonants. The preterite generally had the ending -ede from Primitive Germanic -idon, but verbs whose present stems ended in dd, tt(=West Germanic dj, tj) had -de, -te on analogy with the verbs which originally had long stems./ In the 2nd and 3rd singular present indicative syncopation occurred in verbs with originally long radical syllables. In the preterite, syncopation of the vowel -e-(<i) of the ending occurred in most verbs with originally long radical syllables. Syncopation occurred even in verbs with origianlly short radical syllables if the radical syllable ended in d or t. In the past participle, syncopation, assimilation, and simplification occurred if the radical syllable ended in d or t./ The verbs of class Ⅱ in Germanic had o-stems. To this o was added the infinitive ending -jan. producing *-ojan, which by i-umlaut > *-ejan, then by contraction > -ian, and finally > -ian. With the exception of a few primary verbs all the verbs belonging to this class were denominative. The denominative verbs were originally all formed from nouns belonging to the Germanic o-declension, and had -j- in all forms of the present. The -oj- regularly became -i- which not being original did not cause i-umlaut of the stem-syllable. The i was often written -ig-, also -ige- before guttural vowels. The medial -o- in the preterite indicative was regularly shortened to -u- in prehistoric Old English and then later became -o-, -a-. A large number of the verbs which originally belonged to class Ⅲ went over into this class in prehistoric Old English./ The third weak verbs in Germanic had ai-stems. Nearly all the verbs of this class were originally primary verbs of which there were two types in Primitive Germanic: (1) Verbs which had -æi- in the preterite and past participle. (2) Verbs which had -j- in the present first personal singular, and third personal plural and in the infinitive, but no medial vowel in the preterite and past participle, which accounted for the absence of i-umlaut in these forms./ In Old English the verbs originally belonging to the third class have been so widely and thoroughly influenced by analogy with the first and second classes that practically no traces of the Germanic conjugation remain.
